Thought I should probably 'officially' announce this. White Light (working title) is a vertically-scrolling shooter - those who were at Byte Back might remember me mentioning a 'better than Firetrack' shooter, this is it!

I'll try not to repeat anything on the WIP page here, go look at it! Things that are planned for but not in yet include loads of powerups, huge bosses, masses of enemies everywhere, etc - basically everything a BBC shooter normally isn't. I'm also planning to do an enhanced Master 128 version with music and even more enemies and levels.

Graphics so far have been 'borrowed' and badly modified from Firetrack, Lightforce and Wings of Death.

It mostly runs at 50 fps so far, but I'm overrunning the display a bit, so stars and bullets at the top of the screen tend to disappear and tear somewhat. This affects the second level less, as it hasn't got any stars. Looks quite impressive in motion though I think, I'll try to get a video up.

I've uploaded a video to the WIP page. It's taken from Beebem's AVI output - for some reason Beebem does some comedy rescaling on White Light so it flickers even more than it does normally and looks blurry and everything.

Bonus points to anyone who can name the tune I'm tapping fire to at the end of the video.

Looking nice Tom, despite the BeebEm video weirdness! How are you implementing the smooth scroll? Same method as Firetrack (by giving exactly one of the character rows a variable number of scanlines, and then compensating with R5), or by using two CRTC cycles like Blurp?

"Name that tune" - is it "Shaddupa ya face" by Joe Dolce? :D

I'm using the Blurp method - struck me as easier!

Tune - miles off! I'd be amazed if anyone works out what it is ;). It's early 90s if anyone wants a clue...

Looking nice Tom, very smooth.. be nice to see it populated a bit with some graphics. I like the name too :)

Are you setting it in space like FireTrack?

Couldn't get audio working on mine, perhaps don't have the codec so sadly cannot participate in the tune compo :)

oh no, no audio... you have to get it purely from the rhythm of the gunfire

is it.... "things that make you go hmmmm" by C&C Music Factory :?

Nope - keep guessing! ;) Bit more ravey if you want another clue.

Dave - some levels in space, some not. Not having to update the stars on some levels means more time for sprites!

Very close - it's Your Love by The Prodigy, but it's on the same LP so I think that counts!

Hi,

Is there any progress on this game?
I was really looking forward to it (being a shootemup fan)

Cheers!
