Finally I've found some time to tweak the game following some feedback from they guys that attended the Stardot hardware hacking weekend in August 2013.

JSnake has now been released!!

I've tweaked the joystick sensitivity (code based on PJ's routine). I've switched off the cursor too!

I've written up a retrospective diary from May 2012 to release in Sept 2013.

I've learned a lot about the Beeb's hardware whilst coding this, as well as basic game techniques. For my next project, I'd like to have a go at a dogfight game like : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpKoMcjNhDk

There was a helicopter game for the BBC I had on a tape one time actually called Dogfight which had the same sort of game mechanic, albeit with slow flickery animation.

Thanks to PJ, Richard TW, Tom Walker, Dave Footitt and MartinB, Samwise and Arcadian for their help and encouragement.

Great stuff, congratulations on finishing the game! Harder work than they look these 8 bit games!

Ace, I spent a lot of time playing that on the Amiga, but up until now never knew what it was called! I started a version on the Archimedes but (brace yourself) it never took off

Congratulations, jbnbeeb! It now looks like a full, all-round game and is very playable!

When jbnbeeb first mentioned his dogfight game idea, it reminded me instantly of Sopwith 2 by David L. Clark which I used to play on an old green-screen PC XT.

It was purposely written as an example to show off two-player simultaneous network play between two machines. It has dogfighting, along with other staples like an environment, buildings and cows. There are several versions available (a good fan-site describing them is sopwith.org), but The Author's Edition released after the millennium is probably a good place to start looking at it.

I think it sounds like a great idea. Mega bonus points if you can get it working over econet - I'd be amazed!

Sam.

Hi there,

Version 1.02 released with bugfixes and RS logo branded load screen following feedback from Samwise.

I did the fixes a while back but if IIRC

- disabled Escape key in loading screens and in game
- changed sensitivity of joystick control so that the stick doesn't have to be moved so far back for snake to move
- Corrected load screen to display "Retro Software" branding correctly

ssd file and sourcecode can be found at http://www.retrosoftware.co.uk/jsnake

Work on my Dogfight game is continuing.. I've worked on it extensively over December/January, but not much to show for it as yet. Got a fast sprite routine up and running now. Will start a dev diary when I have a couple of screenshots worth looking at.

Thanks,
jbnbeeb

just loaded this into a electron from the 'Master tape', and plays perfectly, not slow or anything.

so could say it's a electron game too! :)

Looks good jbnbeeb, is that "fruit" I see in the still shot?

Is this Master tape from DaveM?If so - there's been another bug fix (hopefully the final one!!) that should be used instead. I'll have to look in my PC for it. I meant to post it up way back in April this year.

This was following feedback I had at Wakefield - the high score table had a bug as did the snake, whereby it was occasionally possible to cross over yourself (dodgy collision detection)

Yup - a lemon. I don't know if snakes eat lemons, but it looked prettier than a square which is what it was previously :)

Finally got around to uploading latest version of JSnake [v1.03 - hopefully the last!] with high score table and collision detection fixes.

Hi Jason,

Nice job, well done!!!!!!
Hmmmmm, looks like I need some more training to score a reasonable highscore ;)

Greetings

the actual 'Master tape' is still under my bed! DaveM has still to receive it.
yes, it was done a while ago (8/3/14 @4:34pm to be exact) from the v1.00UEF to .SSD into SuperMMC then out to a .WAV, then onto tape!!
so will update the last file JSGAME to the newer one v1.03 , NOT the 99livesDEBUGjsnake1_03.zip [2.52 KiB] one ;)

I emailed DaveM an ssd of jsnake 1.03 last week which could be used to turn in to a UEF (phew) which has the compressed cassette loading screen.. the one on the RS link earlier in the thread is the regular disk version which has a mode 1 loader screen.

I had the earlier .UEF tape, so all I did was put on the newer v103 of the JSGAME main file on the end. :)

DaveM got the tape on Sunday (24/8/14) So your nice ldr screen is still intact 8-)
