I thought I'd posted not having read page 5 a couple of days ago asking how you made the title screen DaveF. What software did you use to create the screen? Not BBC software then? |

You posted in the Repton: The Lost Realms forum, in a topic discussing a R:TLR demo. Not surprising if DaveF missed it ... DaveF used Francis' BBC Micro Image Converter. It's stupendously effective! Sam. |

It was, as said above, then run through Francis' BBC converter. Looking forward to the new version then, I can run the original through again |

This is simply great! I think the speed is fine - there are many instances in BBC games where it takes forever to get from one side of the screen to the other... a bit of a pain when you're trying to explore. As for the proposed gravity effect to falling, I think it would be a good touch to add. Keep at it! Is there a story line to go with it? What's the objective? |

As Sam says, if you want a "proper" background, just check out the Lovecraft story, it's a beauty. As for the object of the game, it is simply to get out alive and sane. I have most of the game already planned (done about 30 screens and planning about 70), it's just finding the time to do it. Thanks for your comments anyway, sometimes you can feel like you're going it alone half the time |

Samwise wrote: ...start with the H.P. Lovecraft novella the game is based on ... Oops - missed that link. Thanks.According to Wikipedia, there's a forthcoming film in 2010. Much as I detest marketing tie-ins, perhaps there could be some acknowledgement in the game packaging that the story which inspired the game is to be made into a film... although might be a bit of a gamble if the film's pants. And if the story copyright has really expired (as mentioned in Wikipedia), does this mean publishers no longer have to pay royalties? If so, they might provide cheap copies of the book to be bundled with the game (an easy way to offload stocks before reissuing with new cover to capitalise on film release)...just a thought. |

Wonderful ideas there, but sadly I think the target market for the promo tie-ins, etc. might be a little limited |

Unless you can say for sure the story is in the public domain, we have to assume it isn't. Sam. |

Hmm ... I've just found the section I assume you're referring to, on H. P. Lovecraft - 6.2 Intellectual property. It claims that At the Mountains of Madness became public domain in all 27 European Union countries on 1 January, 2008 because the European Union Directive on harmonising the term of copyright protection of 1993 extended the copyrights to 70 years after the author's death. So I assume that means anyone can do whatever they want with the story, within the confines of the EU. The issue would appear to be a lot murkier in the US, though, which should prove interesting if Guillermo del Toro ever gets financing for his adaptation. Sam. |
