I have been busy coding away at the 6502 conversion and progress is going well. The current code passes the CZECH Ver 0.8 checker without any errors (a version 5 data file BTW) and plays games up to the point of reading/parsing/tokenising keyboard input. This is something for me to look at tomorrow. You can see a movie of the software in action at : http://www.g7jjf.com/public/czech.zip The program is a lot faster than the Basic code but due to constant disc activity to process the game data files, it is still a little slow. Perhaps some disc virtual memory manager is still called for. There is no point in releasing the ROM image yet as you can't do much with it. Perhaps in another week or two, I may have something to release for testing. Jon. |

That's looking great, Jon. That speed looks much more playable, than your first BASIC version already - and I don't know whether you've even looked at optimising the most-used opcodes yet. I assume it would be slower still, though, on a real beeb - as a real disk drive would be slower than an emulator. It's great progress, though! Already, the speed looks about on a par with the beeb versions of The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings: Game One. In an interesting twist of fate, an old Infocom network hard drive has just appeared. A technical blogger has been dissecting it and has just released the prototype versions of the sequel to the The Hitch-hiker's Guide To The Galaxy known as Milliways: The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe. One's a version 6 file, but the first beta is a version 4 z-code file which should (eventually) work on your intepreter, if that's of interest ... Sam. |
